7:00

WITL : Sunday

12:05

Heading to bed - SNL got me again. The plan is to be up and on the bike trainer by 6.

12:30

Ha! Still awake, did some prep for morning and started the dish washer. This probably won't be as funny at 5:30 :)

2:20

Oldest up - mom took over

6:08

Up late, still need to get dressed and set up. Shorter than planned workout ahead.
  • Eat breakfast
  • Setup bike
6:29

Finally on the bike. 45 minutes lost to sleeping in.

45 minutes mostly normal pace. Mix in some hills.
Since I'm on a trainer hills equals big gear which should slow down my cadence.
This was supposed to be a 90 minute ride

7:15
  • Off the bike.
  • Chat with wife.
  • Take shower
  • Get dressed
  • Brush oldest's hair and teeth
  • Brush middle's hair and teeth
  • Put bike away
  • Get coats on
8:00

Out the door on the way to church.

8:30

At church, on time. Climbed what felt like a hundred steps to find a new place to sit. My legs are more tired than I figured :)

Philippians 1:15-18

The littlest didn't make it, mom took her to the family room.

10:00

Young families group
The littlest didn't make it. Mom put her in the nursery. She didn't make it there either.

11:20

Home. Figure out what we want for lunch.

11:25

Help the kids with a craft.

11:50

Lunch in for the kids - corn dogs and fresh oven baked fries.

The wife is on the bike trainer

Pizza and cut veggies for the adults (I snuck a corn dog too)

12:00

Took some water down to the wife and turned off the heat. The trainer is an unhappy place when the heat is on. Also made sure the fan was blowing on her.

12:40

Lunch

1:00

Lunch is done - veg for a few

1:35

Just woke up from a nap. The wife is making soup for tomorrow.

3:15

Made a double batch of hummus and some fresh lemonade. Who would have thought that would take so long :)

3:40

Just got done sitting around chatting with the SIL and wife. Also tasted some of the new lemonade. Gonna go hang out with the kids for a bit.

3:55

Parents know, if your kids are playing peacefully, let them play. I watched them play for a bit while I held the littlest. Mom and SIL went to the store for a small break.

5:30

The SIL and wife came home with super bowl snacks. My body is a temple of sugar and salt :p. We spent some time enjoying a tiny bit of that, then went down to watch some pre-game and tickled the kids for about 45 minutes.

Game time.

7:00

Bedtime for the kids. Getting a kid to eat soup when there are snacks around is T.O.U.G.H. But we did it.

7:30

Kids in bed
  • Bath time done
  • Teeth brushed
  • Hair brushed
  • Books read
  • Tucked in
7:50

Kids both sleeping. The best thing about this time of day is that I usually sneak a little nap in :p

9:00

Game is over. Time to get ready for the morning. Up before five :s

9:15

Ok for real this time, make lunch. The littlest was squawking up a storm and I hadn't taken a turn yet.

10:05

Made lunch for tomorrow, packed swimming and running gear. Talked to the wife for a while.

Time to stretch, need more sleep than last night ;)

10:25

Stretching done - heading to bed.

A week in the life

Whenever I talk about triathlons or running or biking or swimming individually with people who don't do all three or don't do any of them the thing I hear most is: how do you find the time?

I'm married, have three little kids and a job. I feel like I live a pretty normal life, and tossing in 7 or 8 hours of workouts a week in there is pretty doable without any major interruption.

So this week I will post an entry a day about how that day went down. This week of training isn't super strenuous, there will be weeks in my future before June where the hours start to rachet up a bit, but the general idea of how I fit workouts into my daily schedule and still have time for everything else is roughly the same.

One important note
My wife is the most supportive person I know when it comes to basically all things in my life. As I navigate my life from day to day I try to identify traits in others I enjoy, appreciate, and want to emulate. This is one of those traits. Without her love and support I am sure I would be much more stressed about getting time in from day to day.

January Training Notes

This month my totals look like this

DistanceTime
Swim31,000 yards11 hours
Bike73 miles6:15 hours
Run43.5 miles6:15 hours

Overall
My official training plan started on the 23rd. The rest of the month was gearing up for the plan. Establishing a 'base' if you will. The plan assumed I was not just climbing off the couch. With just over a week under my belt the plan has added a certain amount of structure to the schedule which is a special challenge all it's own. But so far so good.

Swim
Swimming is going well, I'm doing an hour three days a week, averaging about 3k yards a day. I've said it before and I'll say it again, joining a masters team is probably the easiest way to get better at swimming. My sister-in-law who proclaims she had never swam before is already on the verge of moving out of the beginner's lane.

Bike
Last month I said I needed to get my butt ready for the training season (literally - so it wouldn't be sore.) I didn't quite get there, so my little tushy has been sore for a few days here. All of those hours are trainer hours, but it's going well. As I look forward on the schedule I can see that the bike portions are going to get tougher.

Run
Having an abnormally warm winter has been great. I think of all that running I've only done two on the treadmill. One thing about the treadmill - IT MAKES RUNNING A MILLION TIMES HARDER.

Two runs. On the left is outside. On the right inside. Notice how I can run almost as far in 10 fewer minutes

Resolution
This month's resolution was to eat breakfast every morning. It went well, I'll be trying to stick with it, though one sort of tricky part of this is that every couple of weeks I like to try to sleep past when someone would normally eat breakfast and just start at lunch time. I didn't do that this month, but I may in the future :)
